Slow Art Day

SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2022 AT 10 AM – 1 PM

Slow Art Day (founded in 2010) is an annual global event with a mission to help more people discover the joy of looking at and learning to appreciate art. Slow Art Day 2022 is celebrated internationally on Saturday, April 2. This year the Lincoln Arts Institute in Historic Downtown will join in and invite their community to come and experience art slowly alongside cities, museums, and galleries in Northern Ireland, Denmark, Australia, Hungry and around the world on all seven continents, including Antarctica. www.slowartday.com.
Slow Art Day has three basic components.
1st find out who is participating locally.
2nd attend and look at three-five pieces of art slowly, allowing 3-10 minutes to view each piece of designated artwork.
3rd reflect about the Slow Art Day experience in your community
Why slow?
When people look slowly at a piece of art, they make discoveries. The most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert (or expertise). And that’s an exciting discovery. It unlocks passion and creativity and helps to create more art lovers.
*Over 1,500 individual Slow Art Day events have taken place since their official launch in 2010.
*Slow Art Day events have taken place on all seven continents, including Antarctica.
*700 venues (museums, galleries, artist studios, sculpture parks, public art sites, etc.) have hosted Slow Art Day events.

“Conversations” Opening Reception – Tony Crowley

THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 2022 AT 5 PM – 8 PM

The Lincoln Arts Institute invites the community to the opening reception of the alluring collection of large-scale drawing by artist Tony Crowley.
He mentions, “I use music and poetry as sources for my images in the same way that other artists use landscapes or the figure. I select works that I find especially moving and/or meaningful, study them closely and record my responses, questions, and discoveries about the sources. I sketch out my visual reactions to them using the typical art elements, e.g., shape, line, texture, value, etc. During this process, I find myself developing a palpable connection with the poets or composers through their work. I feel as if we are engaged in a very intimate dialog. We share ideas, challenge each other, and explore our mutual interest in the creative process.
Eventually, my preliminary studies evolve into finished images that record my private conversations with the artists who have become my mentors, colleagues, and friends.”
Tony teaches drawing, watercolor, and art criticism at ISU, the position from which he will retire in May of this year.
Crowley’s works can be found in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Harwell Art Museum, the Sheldon Memorial Gallery, the Cedar Rapids Art Museum, the Galesburg Civic Art Center, the Academy of Art Museum of Maryland, the Association Mouvement Art Contemporain in Chemalieres, France, the Maytag Foundation, the Pioneer Corporation, and a variety of university and private collections.
The show will be available for viewing on Fridays from 5-8 PM, Saturdays 10-1 PM and by appointment. The exhibition will be showcased until April 8th.
